This exotic plant was found in the most unexpected place: a run-down gas station (perhaps the only gas station) in Balmorhea, TX, not far from Fort Davis, TX. The air out there is dry and cool (for Texas), and the little town grew up around a spectacular natural springs system which has now been made into a public swimming area and State Park. I had never seen this blooming shrub and I still don't know its name. But it was very happy where it grew. Later I decided to make a large painting of it with an abstracted background. This painting is all about color, energy, and form.
